12 WEDDING DAY TIPS FOR GROOMS 2024:
GETTING DRESSED
Your wedding day should be one of the most memorable and special days of your life. As an experienced wedding photographer in Ireland, I've learned some useful tips and tricks that can help make your day as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Most of you haven't been a groom before but I've done this hundreds of times, so check out my helpful guide below for some wedding day advice for couples and grooms when it comes to getting dressed. I am here to help make your special day as perfect and stress free as it can be!
1. DON'T SWEAT THE LITTLE THINGS!
This is my number one piece of advice for every aspect of your wedding, at some stage you may feel a bit overwhelmed with all there is to do but don't stress!
It always works out on the day and the main thing is you get to marry the person of your dreams with all your favourite people...and me. The rest will fall into place.
2. BE YOURSELF!
Don't dress for anyone else! Make sure that whatever you choose to wear on the big day from suit, dress to shoes, that you feel comfortable and the best version of yourself. I've had some brides and grooms in the past who chose suits or shoes that really didn't feel like their style and had a hard time dealing with it on the day. If you don't like dress shoes, don't wear them. If you don't like how you feel in a formal suit, wear something more colourful. The main thing is to feel entirely your most awesome self on your wedding day. Forget about everyone else.
3. TRY YOUR WHOLE OUTFIT ON BEFORE THE BIG DAY
Most grooms will obviously try on their suit before the big day, but many don't try it on with the shirt, braces, shoes and socks. Give it a try, just to make sure there are no unwanted surprises on the day.
4. TIE YOUR TIE
These days a lot of guys don't wear a tie to work so if you're not sure how to tie one, do a tutorial on youtube or ask a family member to show you how it's done. It can be handy to do this the day before and just tighten it on the day.
5. POCKET SQUARE
Just like the tie, most guys aren't used to folding pocket squares so give it some practice before the day. Again youtube is full of step by step guides for different folds of pocket squares.
Here's an example:

6. DON'T BE AFRAID OF COLOUR!
Don't feel like you have to wear a dark suit on your wedding day, there are so many great styles and colours out there to choose from so give it a try! If you'd prefer a dark suit then maybe add some flare with your shirt, tie or pocket square. The main thing is to feel and look like your best self.
7. BOUTONNIÉRES
No it's not the name of a swashbuckling group of French pirates, I'm talking about the small cluster of flowers that groomsmen wear on their lapel. These are always fastened to the LEFT lapel. Most florists will supply you with long single pins but I recommend asking for large safety pins. It can be difficult to get them straight with the single pin and you mightn't want multiple holes in your suit.
Another option is the latest trend of pocket flowers, these sit neatly into the pocket and have no risk of falling out or sitting crooked. You can also avoid any holes in your good suit. They look pretty damn cool too.
8. ACCESSORIES
Don't forget to show some personality and style with your accessories!
Cufflinks, braces, tie pins, socks and watches can all add some flair to your wedding day outfit. Pocket watches on a chain look classy AF and including some hidden details to your suit makes it all the more special on the day.
9.DRESS FOR THE SEASON
I say this to brides too; keep the season in mind when choosing your wedding day outfits. As a Dublin wedding photographer I've been to so many weddings where I'm sweating in the sun and the poor lads are in three piece wool suits and red faces. Don't do it!
If you're having a summer wedding; wear a linen without the waistcoat, or shirt, waistcoat and braces...both super cool! Leave the heavy wool suits for Autumn and Winter weddings.
10. IRON MAN
Make sure you and your wedding party all have access to an iron on the big day. Most hotels and wedding venues will supply these as standard but if you're in a different type of venue make sure you get get your hands on an iron. You may have everything looking perfect but not everyone else will.
11. NO PHONES IN POCKETS
This is such an annoyance for photographers and videographers.
Phones in pockets! You won't notice it at the time but every lad in your wedding photos having a large rectangle bulge will be distracting. Especially in more fitted suit trousers. Ditch the phones from your pants pocket just for the day. Keep it in the inside pocket of your jacket or with someone nearby.
Top tip!
12.CHECK LIST
Make sure to have a check list for yourself and a small checklist for your wedding party for their outfits. Dress, knickers, bra, tights, shoes. Jacket, shirt, tie, shorts, pants, socks, shoes. It may sound simple but there's often someone whose forgotten shoes or a shirt so giving them a tiny checklist with their outfits can help.
